Here are some highlights from this week’s Health Innovation Roundup: Headlines The National Angel Capital Organization (NACO) selected Edmonton-based True Angle Medical as Edmonton’s startup of the year for 2021. The company’s founder and CEO Dr. Jana Rieger told Taproot that in addition to the award, there will be an investment prize, but details are still being finalized. A study led by University of Alberta pharmacy researcher John Ussher has uncovered a new approach to prevent heart failure in patients with Type 2 diabetes. A U of A team has identified the protein that blocks the body’s ability to get rid of bad cholesterol, which could help researchers find better treatments to prevent heart disease. According to Lawrence Richer, academic lead of Precision Health at the U of A, the integrated health system in Alberta provides an opportunity to “help assure that promising discoveries will make it from the lab to the patient.” The Alberta Medical Association (AMA) has rejected a tentative agreement with the provincial government. The AMA said 53% of physicians rejected the deal while 47% supported it. According to The Canadian Press, the proposed agreement specified that the collective baseline pay for doctors would remain static at about $4.6 billion a year over four years. Edmonton-based Translational Research in Oncology (TRIO) was featured in a new article by Folio. TRIO currently runs cancer clinical trials around the world. Health City CEO Reg Joseph is participating in an online webinar hosted by the Walrus Leadership Forum on Health Care on April 15. The Digital Health Integration Readiness Platform (Pre-HaTCH) concluded its fourth and final session on March 25.
