The deadline to apply to Investment Summit VI is Sept. 20.True Angle has been accepted into the Mayo Clinic Innovation Exchange to further advance its Mobili-T system for dysphagia.Alberta has an opportunity to modernize its laws in a way that makes valuable data more accessible to innovators and entrepreneurs without breaching privacy, proponents of the innovation economy told Taproot. “The opportunity around commercialization and economic growth is not — can I repeat? — not about selling data,” said Reg Joseph of Health Cities. “That is not what we want to do, because actually, it doesn’t make sense to do it. It’s selling the golden goose.”Alberta Innovates, the University Hospital Foundation, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) are investing $21 million into the Alberta Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research SUPPORT Unit (AbSPORU). “Having more evidence available at (health-care workers’) fingertips … it will make a huge difference in the responsiveness, the effectiveness with which they provide care,” said Alberta SPOR executive director Kelli Buckreus.The Metabolomics Innovation Centre (TMIC) and GlycoNet Integrated Services, two research centres at the University of Alberta, have received nearly $20 million in funding through the Canadian Foundation for Innovation’s Major Science Initiatives Fund to advance knowledge in fundamental fields concerning the body and cell processes.Alberta Health Services has announced the launch of a pilot project with Alberta Blue Cross, primary care providers, and the Yes Health mobile platform on a digital diabetes prevention program.A fundraiser for the University Hospital Foundation organized by Nick Lees to mark his 80th birthday has already surpassed $100,000 ahead of an event to be held on Oct. 14.Dr. Timothy Caulfield, professor and Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Science Policy at the University of Alberta, spoke to Design Lab with Bon Ku about debunking pseudoscience.Riya Ganguly, the University of Alberta’s first associate vice-president of enterprise, spoke to The Quad about her new role. “There are opportunities to revamp and rethink the U of A’s role in the broader innovation ecosystem,” she said.Alberta Innovates released Bringing the Future to Life, Today, a video promoting its efforts to lead the evolution of health. “Alberta is taking bold steps with strategic digital health investments to ensure we are globally competitive in securing health and economic benefits for our province,” Sunil Rajput, a director of research and health innovation, said in an accompanying release.Pallium Canada, an Ottawa-based non-profit that helps build capacity in healthcare settings, is partnering with key health and research organizations in Alberta to implement innovative approaches to palliative care.
