Here are some highlights from this week’s Health Innovation Roundup: Headlines University of Alberta spinoff oncology company Pacylex Pharmaceuticals announced the start of its Phase 1 clinical trial for anti-cancer drug PCLX-001 at the Cross Cancer Institute. The study will “examine the safety and tolerability of PCLX-001 and determine the dose to be used in initial efficacy studies.” U of A public health professor Dean Eurich said synthetic data is based on real health records and it “could create more opportunities for research and training without compromising patient privacy.” Eurich is the academic lead on a synthetic data project initiated by Health Cities and other Canadian partners. AltaML co-CEO Nicole Janssen was named a finalist for the 2021 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards in the Start-Up Award category. Janssen is also a finalist for an Alberta Women Entrepreneurs Award in the Emerging Entrepreneur Award category. Kemet founder and CEO Morẹ́nikẹ́ Ọláòṣebìkan was named a finalist in the health security and pandemic’s challenge by Solve, an initiative of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Through modular medication manufacturing, Kemet aims to solve drug shortages around the world by predicting and producing essential medications in prefabricated onsite facilities. Former UN force commander and Canadian senator Roméo Dallaire is leading a series of virtual talks on mental health between Sept. 22. and Nov. 10.
