Here are some highlights from this week’s Health Innovation Roundup: Headlines Dr. Keith Aronyk, a neurosurgeon at the University of Alberta, has received the inaugural Dr. Peter B. R. Allen lifetime achievement award in health. He spoke to Global News about his work to bring state-of-the-art brain care to Edmonton, including the Gamma Knife, which uses highly focused beams of radiation to treat brain conditions. KemNet is helping to address the shortages of children’s pain and fever medications in Alberta, Ontario, and now Saskatchewan. “When the Tylenol and Advil shortage started … it was just the perfect opportunity for us to use the platform to help resolve that,” CEO and founder Morẹ́nikẹ́ Ọláòṣebìkan told CBC. Celanese has opened a 1,000-square-foot cleanroom facility to help it meet the “high global demand for pharmaceutical-grade polymers used in the development of implants and inserts for sustained-release drug delivery.” A collaboration between the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Faculty of Arts, and people with lived experience of brain disease and mental health disorders has led to an exhibit called Connections: Bringing Neuroscience and Art Together. The art exhibit,which depicts the beauty of the brain and its fragility, was displayed all summer at the McMullen Gallery and is now available online and as a book. BioTalent Canada’s new podcast, The Science of Talent, kicks off with a conversation with Health Cities CEO Reg Joseph about the current state of the bio-economy and what is needed to mitigate the talent crunch. Ratmir Derda, CEO of 48Hour Discovery, will be presenting on the Accelerating Discovery of New Therapeutics on Oct. 12 at a Prairie BioEconomy Guild event. Derda received the Scientific Achievement and Innovation award from BioAlberta in 2021. The Glycomics Institute of Alberta is hosting its Inaugural Symposium on Oct. 13 and 14. The event will feature a scientific symposium and a public lecture on “the secret science of sugars.” Dr. Jack Jhamandas, a neurologist at the University of Alberta, will present on the latest Alzheimer’s research at an estate planning seminar for the University Hospital Foundation on Oct. 27.
