Here are some highlights from this week’s Health Innovation Roundup:

News

  • The University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Dean Dr. Richard Fedorak died peacefully on Nov. 8. His family is asking for donations to the University of Alberta through the Dr. Richard Fedorak Memorial Fund. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Fedorak co-founded UAlberta spin-off company Metabolomic Technologies Inc., which created the non-invasive test to detect pre-cancerous polyps PolypDX. The University of Alberta will host a public celebration of life with details to come in the following weeks.

  • John Lewis gave a presentation on his University of Alberta spin-off company Nanostics to Falling Walls Venture in Berlin this week.

  • The Health Quality Council of Alberta appointed board members including Mohammad Masood Peracha, Shirley Kine and Sandy (Sandi) Nadine Kossey. Dr. Trevor W. Theman was appointed as a board member and chairman.

  • Edmonton psychiatrist Dr. Michael Marshall has been announced as the keynote speaker for next year’s Inclusive Health Conference. Dr. Marshall is a psychiatrist who specializes in the mental health of trans patients. He founded the Gender Health Program at the University of Alberta earlier this year to help train doctors in providing health care for trans people. The conference will be held at Lister Hall on March 16, 2019.

Events

  • This year’s Gairdner Research Symposium will take place on Nov. 15 and 16 and with the theme Precision Health—From Data to Wellness. While the symposium is full, there is a waitlist.
  • The Accelerating Primary Care Conference will be held at the Westin on Nov. 29 and 30. The event will feature stories from patients and providers, innovations and discussions.
