Here are some highlights from this week’s Health Innovation Roundup: Headlines The federal and provincial government announced a $33.8 million funding boost to repair and upgrade health care facilities in 12 municipalities across Alberta. U of A researchers identified a new way to prevent permanent hearing loss in childhood cancer survivors who are being treated with a common drug called cisplatin. U of A researchers are studying pharmacogenetic testing and how to best implement it in Alberta. Dr. Tony Kiang told Global News said this testing allows doctors and pharmacists to tailor the drug and the dosage to the patient, based on their genetic information. Edmonton startup PulseMedica is developing new imaging technology to treat retinal diseases. Future Fields has launched the EntoEngine platform to produce bioactive growth factors, the most significant component of cellular meat. Edmonton-based Nabati Food is aiming to be the first company in Canada to make plant-based liquid eggs, reported the Edmonton Journal. The YEG Startup Community Awards will celebrate the city’s innovation community on May 20, including entities like DrugBank, Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation (API), and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii). Managing editor of Taproot Emily Rendell-Watson is hosting the event. DrugBank co-founders Craig Knox and Michael Wilson spoke to CBC’s Radio Active about how their company developed into the world’s largest pharmaceutical knowledge database. DrugBank now has information on more than 14,000 drugs. Real Talk Ryan Jespersen hosted an innovation roundtable on May 14, featuring MACH32, Innovate Edmonton, and the University of Alberta. Alberta Health Services is offering a six-week series of workshops to support Albertans suffering from long-term health conditions. The first virtual workshop of Better Choices, Better Health starts on June 10.
