Here are some highlights from this week’s Health Innovation Roundup: Headlines New technology developed by GLC Medical Inc. to rapidly detect COVID-19 may have the potential to detect other diseases such as HIV, malaria, and Ebola virus disease, the company told CTV Edmonton. The Edmonton Regional Innovation Network (ERIN) will receive $4.9 million from the province as its share of $18.7 million over three years for regional innovation networks announced by the province on May 10. Innovate Edmonton will receive $4.1 million from the grant. Trevor Caswell of the Edmonton International Airport has been elected chairman of the board of Pharma.Aero, a collaboration between life sciences and medtech shippers, airport operators, logistics specialists, and other stakeholders in the medical supply chain. Micheal Guirguis of Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation participated in a panel discussion on transformations in health technologies at the recent Canadian Blockchain Consortium conference. And API’s Andrew MacIsaac addressed the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s executive summit series on Positioning Life Sciences as an Economic Growth Vector. Folio highlighted two new studies from a research team led by Dr. Evangelos Michelakis uncovering how metabolism triggers the growth of cancer cells, which could lead to new ways to diagnose and treat aggressive cancers. Real Talk with Ryan Jespersen spoke to three scientific innovators, including virologist Lilly Pang, who has been studying COVID-19 in wastewater, and AI expert Ross Mitchell, who is working on how artificial intelligence can help physicians and other health-care workers manage vast amounts of information. Researchers at the University of Alberta have released a research paper that could allow doctors to better treat Type 2 diabetes by personalizing a combination of drugs and non-pharmaceutical therapy. “Perhaps certain individuals might respond better to one therapy versus another, depending on their ethnic background or their sex, biological differences, for example,” Dr. Andrea Haqq told Postmedia. The University of Alberta’s Faculty of Nursing celebrated eight nursing leaders for their commitment to the profession and patients to mark National Nursing Week. The Canadian Healthcare Network published an article highlighting the gender disparity in pharmacy leadership, noting that women make up 60% to 70% of pharmacists in Canada but only 30% of pharmacy owners, and less than half of the leadership of pharmacy organizations. Rosemarie Cordeta, owner of WholeHealth Pharmacy in Edmonton, said “opportunities or programs to recognize the achievements of women in pharmacy can inspire women to take more leadership roles.” Applications are open until Sept. 15 for the Dr. Masaru Yukawa Award for Innovation in Workplace Wellness, the University Hospital Foundation announced. The Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation and Shoppers Drug Mart announced that registrations are open for the 10th Annual Run for Women in support of women’s mental health programs, which takes place virtually and in-person on May 28.
