Here are some highlights from this week’s Health Innovation Roundup: Headlines Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation announced a new partnership with Campus Alberta Neuroscience (CAN) to expand innovative research and commercialization opportunities in the neuroscience field. The provincial government will be testing a new overdose prevention app to help protect people using opioids and other substances while alone in their homes. A new study, led by scientists at Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) and the University of Alberta, showed that a rare lung disease linked to bats is now found in Alberta. A recent U of A study suggested that therapeutic ultrasound may have the potential for treating pain after chemotherapy. U of A’s director of Parkinson and Movement Disorders Janis Miyasaki has been elected as a vice president of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN). Miyasaki is the first Canadian to have this role. A new episode of Health City Talks discussed the digital transformation of health with the Institute of Health Economics (IHE), Calgary-based ZoeInsights, and the Metabolics and Genetics (M.A.G.I.C.) Clinic. BioAlberta has launched a new internship program to support discovery innovation and commercialization in the life sciences sector. BioAlberta’s initiative is a collaboration with the provincial government, Innovative Medicines Canada, and Western Economic Diversification. Edmonton-based pharmaceutical knowledge base DrugBank‘s team has grown by 156% since last year, the company said in a tweet. U of A cardiac scientist Gary Lopaschuk has been awarded the 2021 University Cup, the University of Alberta’s highest honour for faculty members.
