Here are some highlights from this week’s Health Innovation Roundup: Headlines U of A spinoff company 48Hour Discovery was named one of Edmonton’s top ten therapeutics startups and companies. The company has developed DNA-encoded ‘molecule libraries’ to speed up the search for new drugs. Oncology company Pacylex Pharmaceuticals has closed a round of funding to advance its Phase 1 clinical trial for its anti-cancer drug PCLX-001. The investment was made by Greenfire Bio based in the U.S. Alberta Innovates has launched the Accelerating Innovations into CarE (AICE)-Concepts Program to advance early-stage health research. A new U of A research project, led by assistant professor Soufiane El Hallani, is developing a new genetic sequencing approach to detect pancreatic and biliary cancers. The research is one of seven U of A projects to receive funding from the 2020 Kaye Competition. U of A researchers said there’s a link between increased visits to supervised consumption sites in Alberta and decreased fentanyl-related overdose deaths. According to the study, opioids were involved in more than 80% of all drug-related deaths, with fentanyl involved in 94% of those deaths. U of A research is examining how stress impacts a childhood genetic disorder that affects the nervous system. The provincial government will begin phasing out shared rooms in long-term care facilities following recommendations by national consulting firm MNP. One of the other recommendations is to shift more Albertans to long-term home care services, reported the Edmonton Journal.
