Here are some highlights from this week’s Health Innovation Roundup: Headlines Four University of Alberta projects are among 11 precision health research projects that received a total of $11 million in funding from Accelerating Innovations into CarE (AICE) by Alberta Innovates. Four more U of A projects received $250,000 each in provincial funding from the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) 2020 Exploration competition. PulseMedica and Applied Quantum Materials were among the recipients of the U of A’s Innovation Awards. RJH Biosciences and Mosaic Sensors Corporation were also winners. According to a recent clinical trial, a new implantable device that monitors for atrial fibrillation or an irregular heartbeat could help prevent strokes in patients. U of A researchers have created a new AI-based machine learning model to diagnose diseases faster. The research included contributions from computing scientist Pouneh Gorji, who was killed on Flight PS752 in Iran. A new study showed that only one-third of Alberta doctors refer young patients to weight management clinics. The research found that obesity is more common for children in rural areas, highlighting how online appointments can help access weight management programs. U of A research is looking into how pregnancy impacts children’s asthma symptoms. Calgary-based Kailo Medical announced a new collaboration with Edmonton spinoff company Medo.ai to integrate Medo-Thyroid into its SonoReview product and make nodule classification faster and more accurate. The AI-based tool recently received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). “This is our crucial first approval. We will be seeking additional approvals in Europe, Canada, and worldwide,” Medo.ai’s co-founder Jacob Jaremko told Folio. Ceapro announced the completion of patient enrollment in a clinical study to evaluate beta-glucan as a cholesterol-lowering agent. Edmonton-based PRIMED Medical Products was named one of Canada’s “best managed companies” by Deloitte for four consecutive years. The University Hospital Foundation (UHF) is partnering with First Truck Centre to raise funds in support of Canada’s first stroke ambulance. First Truck has already raised $25,000 and is seeking to raise $500,000, UHF said in a statement. The first episode of Health City Talks Community featured Alaxo, an Edmonton-based provider of innovative solutions for snoring and sleep apnea. DrugBank CEO Mike Wilson is participating in a roundtable session at the inaugural MaRS Impact Health with MaRS Discovery District on June 22. Aurora Cannabis announced the launch of a new science and innovation business unit to accelerate the commercialization of its latest products. The company said the unit will be key in the development of cannabinoid biosynthesis and plant genetics. U of A professor and Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute fellow Russ Greiner has received a lifetime achievement award from the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Association (CAIAC). U of A professor Dr. Hanne Ostergaard has been appointed as the director of the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta (CRINA) for a term of five years.
