Here are some highlights from this week’s Health Innovation Roundup: Headlines The Sensory-Motor Adaptive Rehabilitation Technology (SMART) CREATE program at the University of Alberta was awarded $1.6 million from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to train up to 120 graduate and undergraduate students over the next six years. Jacob Jaremko, U of A radiologist and co-founder of Medo.ai, was named a Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) AI Chair for his application of artificial intelligence. U of A psychology researcher Peggy St. Jacques was named a Canada Research Chair for her work on recalling memories and how this could help people with PTSD stress and anxiety disorders. U of A researchers are collaborating with First Nations communities to improve the health of people living with diabetes. The federal government announced nearly $2 million for three projects in Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador to address alcohol-related harms – and Boyle Street Service Society is getting some of that funding. Alberta announced a $1.5 million pilot project to distribute nasal naloxone at Edmonton’s George Spady Society to help fight the number of opioid overdoses. Alberta Health Services and Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) identified DynaLIFE Medical Labs as the preferred proponent to provide community lab services in the province. AHS and APL will begin negotiating with DynaLIFE to develop a contract for the delivery of laboratory services, AHS said in a statement. DynaLIFE also announced a new partnership with Alberta-based Rapid Infection Diagnostics (RID) to develop a rapid test for diagnosing urinary tract infections (UTIs). Edmonton-based AltaML signed a contribution agreement with Western Economic Diversification Canada to accelerate its development of AI-powered products. Health City and Replica Analytics are hosting the 2021 Synthetic Data Summit on July 7. The event will examine the Alberta Synthetic Data Project, which was recently launched by Health City. An Alberta man is canoeing across the prairies to raise money and awareness for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), reported CBC News.
