A biotechnology spinoff from the University of Alberta would like to make Edmonton integral to molecular discoveries. They are currently working on building a searchable database that helps to make research and development faster and cheaper. The going rate for biotech and large pharmaceutical companies can be anywhere between $500,000 and $1 million for the discovery of a single viable pre-clinical molecule of interest. Cost isn’t the only factor here. While it can be quite expensive to discover the next ibuprofen or acetaminophen, or to discover a molecule that contributes to new diagnostics for things like tuberculosis or cancer, the process of identification can potentially take up to 6 months. This new Edmonton startup, 48-Hour Discovery aims to complete the same process in only 2 days for as little as one-tenth the cost.
